Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel share a memorable moment in New York City!
A fan captured the 70-year-old model dancing to her ex-husband – Billy Joel’s hit “Uptown Girl” while enjoying her ex-husband’s concert among the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Friday, April 26.
A TikTok video showed Brinkley smiling and dancing to the song with a friend as it appeared on a jumbo screen for all viewers to see. While he was singing she looked towards the stage, presumably towards 74-year-old Joel.
Although the couple divorced in 1994, the two remained friends. They have a daughter, Alexa Rae Joel, who also performed at Joel’s concert on Friday.
Famous Story Behind “Uptown Girl” Song
Billy Joel released a hit film in 1983. According to supermodel Elle MacPherson, the singer was dating her when he began writing the song, but he broke up with her midway through the song, and Brinkley starred in the music video.
In his 2014 biography, Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography, Joel confirmed that he originally wrote “Uptown Girl” about all the Manhattan models, but he changed the song’s title when he started dating Brinkley Wrote about Brinkley, Hence Changing it from plural to singular. In 2010, Joel finally confirmed that “Uptown Girl” was written about Brinkley (she appeared in the music video), although he explained that there was more to the story.
“When I started writing the song I wasn’t even dating Christie, I was dating Elle McPherson,” Joel shared on “The Howard Stern Show.” He remembered the moment when he was working on the song when he was surrounded by Brinkley, McPherson and Whitney Houston.
“So I started writing a song called ‘Uptown Girls.’ It was plural. I couldn’t believe, you know, the situation I was in,” he said of having a crowd of beauties surrounding him.
Billy Joel said that when he and McPherson went their separate ways, the nature of the song changed due to his relationship with Brinkley. “And then I started dating Christy and instead of all these different girls, she became the ‘Uptown Girl.’ I started writing it about one person.”
