Where to watch Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup
Gypsy Rose Blanchard is in her “reality TV era.” After showing glimpses of her life in prison in a six-episode docu-series, Blanchard, 32, opens up about her newfound freedom and establishing her identity in a new unscripted series for Lifetime.
Blanchard’s new show, Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup, premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime and runs through July 22. Each episode is available to watch online for traditional and streaming cable subscribers, including DirecTV, Fubo, Friendly, and others.
Why did Gypsy Rose Blanchard go to prison?
According to the series, Gypsy Rose Blanchard suffered years of abuse at the hands of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.
The elder Blanchard possibly had a mental health condition called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. As a result, she misled medical professionals by making them believe that her daughter was in a wheelchair and had a variety of illnesses and diseases. In 2015, Gypsy Rose, determined to break free from her mother’s grip, conspired with her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder Dee Dee, which led to Gypsy Rose’s prison sentence. After completing her 10-year sentence, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released on December 28, 2023.
Does Gypsy Rose have a husband?
Yes, Gypsy Rose Blanchard married her now-estranged husband Ryan Scott Anderson in July 2022
According to Blanchard and Anderson’s marriage license, Anderson is from Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he works as a middle school special education teacher. After her time in prison, Blanchard planned to move to Louisiana, and Anderson joked that this was the reason he initially decided to talk to her.
The two got to know each other when Ryan wrote a letter to Gypsy-Rose during the pandemic in 2020. He told People magazine that he was inspired to do so after a colleague told him about a plan to write a letter to imprisoned Tiger King star Joe Exotic. “I said, ‘I tell you what, if you write to him, I’ll write to Gypsy Rose Blanchard.’ And I watched her documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest about three years ago,” Ryan explained, “and then The Act [a dramatized version of the Blanchards’ story] came out and I never watched The Act, but I remember my friends were talking about The Act and I thought I’d watch the documentary again, so it was pretty fresh in my mind.”
After sending an email and not expecting to hear back, Ryan was surprised to soon receive a reply from Gypsy-Rose, who was attracted to him because he was from Louisiana and enjoyed his relationship with his nephew. Their written messages then turned into frequent phone calls.
Due to prison restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it took a full year for the couple to meet in person. On July 21, 2022, nearly two years after Ryan sent the first email, the couple married in a private ceremony in prison with no guests in attendance.
