Sturgill Simpson’s new name, album and ticket details

Sturgill Simpson is back with a new album, new name and new tour. Simpson revealed a new character called Johnny Blue Skies, which he said would be the name under which all his future albums would appear. He also revealed that the new album, Passage du Désir, is scheduled for release on July 12 via his independent label High Top Mountain Records.

But for the purposes of the tour, he will remain Sturgill Simpson. It is not known whether this distinction is shared based on preference or because major venue operators are unlikely to book shows for a major artist with an alias. But he’ll be hitting the road this fall under under name Sturgill Simpson, with 28 shows in arenas, theatres and amphitheatres over two and a half months starting at L.A.’s Greek Theatre. on September 14. Simpson’s debut album under the name Johnny Blue Skies is the eight-track Passage du Désir, which is scheduled for release on July 12 on his independent label, High Top Mountain Records.

A press release states that “after promising to release only five studio albums under his own name,” Simpson is “starting a new era” under the rebranded Johnny Blue Skies. He has not given a statement as to why he is making this change. But in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2021, Simpson actually vowed that the album he was releasing at the time, The Ballad of Dood and Juanita, would be his last as Sturgill Simpson.

The new album’s tracklist includes “Swamp of Sadness”, “If the Sun Never Rises Again”, “Right Kind of Dream”, “Jupiter Ferry”, “Who I Am”, “Scooter Blues”, “Mint Tea” and “One for the Road”. It was produced by Jonny Blue Skies with artist David Ferguson, with sessions taking place at Clement House Recording Studios in Nashville and Abbey Road in London.

Where to get tickets for the tour

Fans will need to register in advance to get tickets. Registration is open until June 10 at sturgillsimpsonlive.com for a pre-sale that begins June 12 at 10:00 a.m. local time. After that, a “limited number” of tickets will be reserved for general sale on June 14. Ticket resale will be prohibited, except for Ticketmaster’s face value exchange, which aims to prevent secondary market price gouging by only allowing the resale of tickets at the original price.
