Steven Spielberg had started working on a new project with David Koepp
Steven Spielberg’s new film will revive a trend in his career after a decade. The iconic director, whose early works include the television thriller Duel and The Sugarland Express led by Goldie Hawn, is best known for blockbuster releases including the iconic films Raiders of the Lost Ark (the first Indiana Jones films) and Jurassic Park as well as tentpoles that balance popular and prestige sensibilities, like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List. Throughout his career he has been nominated for 23 Oscars, winning three.
In early 2024, it was announced that a new Steven Spielberg sci-fi film was in development. The as-yet-untitled film will hit theatres on May 15, 2026. While details are still being kept under wraps, several factors show it could be a major return to form for the iconic director.
Spielberg has teamed up with one of his most collaborative screenwriters, David Koepp, with whom he has worked on blockbuster franchises such as Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. What will Steven Speilberg’s new film be about?
While the plot of Steven Spielberg’s new film is being kept under wraps for now, Universal Studios, which will develop the project, described it as a “new, original event film.”
Screenwriter David Koepp scripts a story written by the Oscar-winning director himself, while Kristie Macosko Krieger serves as producer. Several reports have speculated that Steven Spielberg, 77, is working on a new UFO movie, but studios have yet to confirm this.
The director of Indiana Jones, considered the most commercially successful director in history, is also participating in a new television series, Cape Fear, from Universal, in collaboration with another of the great directors, Martin Scorsese. The series is based on the 1991 and 1992 thrillers Cape Fear, directed by Scorsese and produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.
Speilberg’s films have failed to make a splash at the box office with his latest semi-autobiographical 2022 release, The Fabelmans, which chronicles his personal journey into filmmaking, grossing just $45 million worldwide. However, it was the subject of high critical praise and earned multiple Oscar nominations.
