Who is responsible for Manipur Violence is it the government or the media or some other reason?
Most of you have seen the news of Manipur Violence and the shameful act on women. That is the most shameful act India has witnessed in this 21st century. After that main media start coving the clashes and destruction of Manipur. However the questions still remain the same who is responsible for this ? why people are not caring about human life? i had done a detail reading about this matter and here are my the result.
When did the Manipur incident happen?
Most media are saying that the conflict start on May 3rd, However, the news portals in Manipur show different Data. Recent Manipur Violence start on month of April which later erupt as volcano on 3rd may. I had notice that not only this year, there is always a tension environment from nineteen century between the groups living there.
Most of the media fail to cover this part as it is true that the media is hungry for TRP, the only cover a news when there will be a major incidents in a particular place. As you can see in the Manipur case the violence are going on for months but they give less important to this news and are covering the Seema Haider love story news. Whatever lets move to the topic.
Before starting there are few question in everyone mind that need to be solve like.
Is Manipur Violence religious ?
Some media channels especially try to give it a religious angle like the conflict between Christianity and Hinduism, However, it was never the case Manipur is the home of 3 groups namely Kuki, Naga and Meitei.
As we move to their history Meitei are the native according to the ancient text Puyas, one while the other two groups were hilly region people mainly Kuki All three groups were Animism (People who worship Sprite and Nature).
In 18th century King Pamheiba adopt Hinduism so as the Meitei but not all of them adopt Hinduism, some which are small number adopt Islam, Christianity and Buddhism or remain Animism.
On the other hand, Kuki and Naga mostly follow Christianity. Judaism or remain Animism. The Christianity well spread in Kuki and Naga because of Harry Verrier Holman Elwin a British born Indian anthropologist, ethnologist and tribal activist, who began his career in India as a Christian missionary. Jawaharlal Nehru appointed him as an adviser on tribal affairs for north-eastern India. His philosophy towards the north-east was partially responsible in its disconnect from the modern world.
After India attained independence in 1947, Elwin entered into an agreement which prohibited the entry of other religions into the North East with Nehru mainly in Nagaland.
If it is not religious conflict the what cause the Manipur Violence?
To know why this violence that occur we have to learn about history (Most news media not saying that the incident is not related to history of Manipur but let me tell you it is 1000% related to History, without knowing the history you will not able to understand the reason for conflict.)
Most of you were not even aware of Manipur’s location in India before the News of Incidents start to surface. Manipur is located in the northeast part of India, where there are 7 states which are also known as SEVEN SISTERS and Manipur is one of them. On the upper side of Manipur is surrounded by Nagaland, Assam and Mizoram and it is also connected to Myanmar with whom it shares a border of length 350 km
Geographically Manipur is surrounded by hills with a small area of land in the center. The beauty of Manipur is un-parallel not only that Manipur is also the well of Talents that has produce 19 Olympian athletes for India.
However at first Manipur was not the Part of India, so how Manipur became part of India.
How Manipur became part of India?
The History of how Manipur became part of India, is one of the important links of current Manipur Violence. In the early days, Manipur was an isolated kingdom which use to share a border with Burma (Present day Myanmar).
There is a history of the everlasting war between the two kingdoms, however, in the 1820s Burma made a full-fledged attack on Manipur which last for 7 years, this period is also called “7 Years of Devastation” where lots of people of three tribes died and were also forced to adopt Burmese culture and Buddhism. Britisher came to rescue Manipur and defeat Burma, but as we know East India Company always have an alternative motive to favour others, so they start controlling Manipur as a result Manipur-Anglo War (1891) occur in which Britisher won the war they start to apply the divide and rule policies to create more difference between the tribes.
In the 2nd World, War Manipur help the Britisher which fought against the Japanese army that enter the Manipur with help of Subash Chandra Bose and Manipur Moirang was the 1st place where for the first time Tricolor was hosted in 19th April 1944. The Japanese and Azad Hind force were defeated before reaching Imphal.
After the Independence of India in 1947, the king of Manipur Bodchandra Singh said that Manipur will remain a independent state n it will neither join India nor Pakistan. However Manipur geographical location there are chances of China invading India through Manipur so it is important to make Manipur part of India. There is also rise in communist movement in Manipur which is dangerous for India. The people are slowly turning against king and a legislative assembly was formed in Manipur, so in the King signed an instrument of Accession in 1949 after that in 1962 it become a Union Territory.
However the king doesn’t take permission from the legislative assembly before signing, this let the tribes (all three tribes) think that the king was forced to sign the agreement because after signing the agreement Manipur is run by central government who has no idea about Manipur culture and traditions. The representative ruling the government were from other parts of India.
Naga tribe want the Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland tribal area should mix with Nagaland
Kuki tribe wants that Kuki living area in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar should merge and form a separate county named ZALE’N-GAM
Meitei wants to larger land for their population (Valley and hills)
In 1956 Indian government according to state reorganization act made Manipur Union Territory and give the Naga & Kuki the ST status whose population is low and mainly live in hilly region, due to high population of Meitei Indian government keep Meitei out of ST status. While Kuki and Naga have the rights to buy the land in valley and hilly region but Meitei cannot buy land in hilly region and have to live in same area and then 1972 Manipur become a state in India. Imagine a house with 10 rooms but you are force to live in 1 room with 7 family members, but slowly the other room people start pushing your wall and decreasing your room size. In that case you have only to option either get squeeze between walls or leave your own house (become outsider in your own house, that why you need some kind of authority so that you will not become a outsider in your own house, for Meitei it the political power or the number of seats in state government.)
During all these conflicts internal conflicts are going on inside the Manipur which is the link to Manipur Violence.
Internal Conflict in Manipur
Naga and Kuki are given ST status, while Meitei live in 10% of the land (valley region) although having a population per cent of 60%, Naga and Kuki live in 90% of the land (hill region with a population of 40%. Naga and Kuki can buy land in valley region but Meitei can’t buy land on hilly regions which is not fair for Meitei
On the other hand, due to the high population, Meitei has a high number of seats (40) in Manipur Legislative Assembly and Kuki & Naga have (20) seats. which is unfair to Kuki and Naga
Kuki community say that state government is favoring the Meitei community and Meitei community say that Indian government is always favoring the Kuki , resulting in loosing their own land because Hilly tribes are taking the valley region slowly and also the encroachment of tribal from Myanmar and Bangladesh in valley region.
During the British rule, the British government bring a land settlement policy where valley reason is given to Meitei community and hill to Naga and Kuki. The problem is that Kuki tribe not believe in living in one place, they live in different different location of forest with there animals, so when Britisher try to settle them in one place it became difficult to follow their culture. This land settlement slowly create wall between the three communities.
Militant organization in Manipur
The tension between them is so high that this tribes have their own Militant group, who are funded by the tribes illegally. Ex – Kuki National Army (KNA), Kuki Commando Force (KCF), Kuki defense Force (KDF), Kuki Independent Army (KIA) , Kuki Front Council (KFC), national socialist council of Nagaland (NSCN)
The Kuki militants group form to protect Kuki people but the main purpose of making was to form the Kuki land ZALE’N-GAM
Same wise the Naga militants group was form to include every Naga living area into Nagaland and form a different country. Naga Militants group still involve in many terrorist activities
According to 1967 act – Unlawful Activities Prevention Act – NSCN was consider a terrorist organization, to achieve their aim they are not only against Indian government but also tribes normally Kuki. the clash between the two normally take the form of violence.
This all are some of the key factor of recent Manipur violence
When the High Court on 19th April pass the Order of Meitei should be given ST status the tension reach its peak, and many protests were performed against the decision of the High Court, the fake news by news agency that a Meitei girl was gang-raped by Kuki, which turns protest into violence. And rest are later shown on all news media from May 3rd to present day .
Best solution for Manipur violence
- Kuki and Naga should agree to NRC and agree to ST status to Meitei
- Meitei should give 50 % political power to Naga and Kuki ( 25- 25 seats each) making it valley 50 seats and Valley 50 seats
In this way all the community can ensure their safety of interest and develop together.
However, the question remains the same who is responsible for Manipur Violence ?
Most of you have a common answer – The BJP government is responsible for Manipur Violence however just 1/10 % correct, the real answer is each and everyone of us.
a) Let’s start with us- People of the central part of India are not interested in the other parts which is why the media is also less interested because the TRP is what the media is Hungry of. Why there are so many terror outfits in North East part of India and why do they want to separate NE from India, the answer is simply discrimination based on their facial feature calling them different names or of a different country that why you will found many people in NE who will say that they don’t want to be part of India because they don’t get the sense of belonging, and the centre gives less importance to the NE development.
b) As I had said before the media is hungry for TRP, that why they want to publish news that will give them more views like “what Tamur eat today” They have time to waste in crappy things, that’s why they ignore NE and they always want to publish news as fast as possible without checking the facts which result in the incidents like Manipur Violence
c) The Police of Manipur – the police of Manipur are more loyal to their tribes than their duty as a policeman
d) The Government of Manipur State – Total failure, the government is not able to control the state, The main thing I noticed in the lack of trust between government – tribes , the communication gap is too large.
e) Most of you are also blaming the PM Modi for remaining silent, yes he should have speak about it. And late respond of Center
f) Now people are debating this government is better this is worst, just shut up they all are the same they are part of chess called politics. The Allience I.N.D.I.A who is showing that they care about Manipur in News channels, for you kind info they don’t care they are doing it to put the opposition down. If they really care about Manipur Violence than the discussion of Manipur would have ended by now in the parliament and the plans to helps the victims will be going on. Because such sensitive case like rape need urgent attention.
f) States like West Bengal and Rajasthan where the government is ignoring the plead of assaulted women are not being heard because the hot topic is Manipur and it can lift their political image in India
g) and Kerala where a community of people openly shouting the slogan of killing and hanging another community but the government still ignored it. WA and you think they care about human rights and the people of Manipur
h) The Britisher that plays the divide and rule policies.
i) The early government who doesn’t give Manipur much attention and was not able to solve the tribe’s conflict and deal with the terror outfits.
j)why the student bodies are mostly involve in protest ?
If you follow up correctly you will find no one is right everyone is guilty.
