Reliance Foundation’s Jyoti Yaraji created history at the Asian Athletics Championships by becoming the first Indian to win gold in 100m hurdles at a continental event.
Championships in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday. In wet and slippery conditions due to heavy rain, Jyoti clocked 13.09 s in the final to top a strong field. Japan’s Asuka Terada (13.13) and Masumi Aoki (13.26) won the silver and bronze respectively.
In the previous 22 editions of the tournament, the only Indians to win medals in the 100 m hurdles event were Anuradha Biswal (bronze in 2000) and Jaipal Hemasree (bronze in 2013).
Jyoti finished first in Heat 1 with a time of 12.98 seconds and advanced to the final. She almost missed breaking the meet mark, which is 12.97.
Jyoti defeated her Japanese rivals in a photo finish, becoming the first Indian woman in history to finish the race in less than 13 seconds. As the fastest woman in Asia this year, she entered the tournament as one of the favorites.
He has also been in fantastic form recently. At the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, where she won two gold medals and one silver, she was awarded the best female athlete.
The Asian Athletics Championships’ 200-meter race will be her next competition.
Gulveer Singh of the Reliance Foundation placed sixth in the 10000m race earlier in the tournament with a time of 29:53.69s on the competition’s first day. Later on in the tournament, he will also run in the 5000-meter race.
