Josh Brolin explained how he got the chance to Be a Director
As an actor, Josh Brolin had a different approach when it came to putting on the director’s hat for an episode of the television series Outer Range.
The Dune: Part Two star recently spoke with Esquire about how he prepared for his television directing debut and what it was like working with actors behind the camera.
Brolin first expanded on a joke he made during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he said, “I don’t particularly love actors as an actor.” However, he told host Jimmy Kimmel at the time that he had a different perspective on them from the director’s point of view.
Now, Josh Brolin clarified to Esquire that it’s difficult with actors, particularly those who are more difficult to work with. “Especially people not coming to set and that kind of shit,” he explained. “If there’s a good reason, I understand it, but if you’re just an actor irritated because you’re too creative or sensitive, I just don’t believe it.”
While he got the opportunity to direct episode six of Outer Range out of nowhere, the Deadpool actor said it was actually due to his experience and skills that others have witnessed over time.
“When I met showrunner Charles Murray, we hit it off immediately. He said, ‘You’re running six.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ That’s how it happened,” Brolin explained. “It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, do you trust me to direct?’ He said, ‘No, I’ve seen the things you’ve done.’ I’ve spent enough time with you and this is your niche. But it was great.”
During the time he worked behind the camera, Josh Brolin admitted that he learned a lot about himself and his interests. Also read – Nicki Minaj detained at Amsterdam airport for alleged drug possession
“I loved it, man. I love his design. I love the architecture of it. I love celebrating it,” he said of directing. “There were a lot of interests I’ve had over the decades that I never really understood. When he directed, he could channel everything into one place without trying to force it. “My whole life had meaning.”
Josh Brolin continued: “I’m not going to stop acting and just be a director. But it uses my sensitivity as a person more. I am naturally a community person. I get excited by experimenting. Imprisoning that with just me feels really limiting. But he may just be a mediocre actor.”
