Halle Berry is shocked to be the only black woman to win a Best Actress Oscar
Halle Berry remains disappointed with the Oscars, as she remains the only black performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. She took home the award for “Monster’s Ball” at the 2002 Oscars, and only one other woman of colour (Michelle Yeoh for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) has won best actress in the 22 years since.
Halle Berry said she was shocked to be the only black woman to win the Best Actress Oscar. The 58-year-old actress told Marie Claire:
“I remain eternally upset that no black woman has followed me in the race for the Best Actress Oscar. That continually saddens me year after year. And it’s certainly not because there hasn’t been anyone who deserved it.”
Berry pointed to Andra Day’s Oscar-nominated performances in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and Viola Davis in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” as two examples of Oscar-worthy performances.
Halle Berry Teases Possible Return of Storm in Future Avengers Movies
During an interview with ComicBookMovie’s Josh Wilding on YouTube, while promoting her upcoming survival horror film Never Let Go Berry revealed about his character Storm in X men. When asked to comment on whether Storm could appear in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, she said “We may never know. We’ll find out, fingers crossed.”
Berry’s version of Storm was rumoured to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, but when the film was released, the character was nowhere to be found. The actress was disappointed she wasn’t included in the film, especially since Ryan Reynolds’ wife contacted her about it. “Blake [Lively] asked me one time (I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show) and she was like, ‘Would you ever be in my husband’s movie as Storm? ’ “I said, ‘Yes, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me,” Berry said.
Berry played Storm in the original X-Men film series, which began in 2000. As one of the most iconic members of the mutant team, Storm can control the weather. Halle Berry Explains Why Never Let Go Convinced Her to Return to the Horror Genre
After an extended absence, Never Let Go marks Oscar winner Halle Berry’s return to the horror genre. Despite the film’s chilling themes, the acclaimed actress reveals the wholesome aspect that intrigued her to try horror again. Never Let Go is Berry’s first horror film title since 2003’s Gothika, which also starred Robert Downey Jr., Penelope Cruz, and Charles S. Dutton.
In an interview with The Philadelphia Tribune, Berry revealed what aspect of Never Let Go she found most intriguing to include in the film. According to the performance caption, she was struck by “the unique portrayal of motherhood,” as her character does whatever it takes to keep her children safe under unusual but heartbreaking circumstances. “While she may not have rescued her children in the traditional sense, her love and dedication to their safety was unwavering,” she said. “The ambiguity between her mental state and the reality of evil kept us on the edge of our seats throughout the film.”
Furthermore, Berry admits that she channelled some of her real-life maternal instincts into her on-screen portrayal in Never Let Go, knowing how far she would go to protect her children as she does in the survival film. “Her ultimate goal was always to protect them. It made me think, as a mother, how far I would go to protect my children. This film is a testament to how far a mother’s love can go to ensure their safety,” she stated.
