Glen Powell admits Sidney Sweeney’s affair rumours ‘worked brilliantly’ for ‘Anyone But You’

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Glen Powell praised the Euphoria star for the role her marketing strategy played in helping make the film a rom-com genre hit. Sweeney also served as executive producer on the project.

“To sell a rom-com you have to have two things, fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a lot of fun together and we have really natural chemistry,” the 35-year-old ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ actor said.

Powell said, “People also want to see what’s going on off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a little bit – and it works surprisingly well. Sydney is very smart. “

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”, the film stars Glen Powell and Sweeney as former lovers who reluctantly reunite at a wedding in Australia. When it opened in the US in December, “Anyone But You” was far from a box office hit and opening weekend ticket sales were reported to be $6 million.

Two months later, the Will Gluck-directed feature passed the $200 million milestone in global ticket sales and became the highest-grossing R-rated romantic comedy since “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” released in 2016.

Tom Rothman, chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, who also oversees Columbia, says, “You have to put the right ingredients in the food: the story, the cast, the filmmakers, the chemistry, the ending.” He said that finding success in the rom-com movie genre is a delicate task. So, if you’re going to make one and do it dramatically, it better be good.
