After 20 years Director Ridley Scott is back with Gladiator 2. The first part of Gladiator which was released in 2000 won 5 Oscars including Best Actor and Best Picture and became the 2nd highest-grossing movie of 2000. Russell Crowe played the main lead in the film as Maximus.
Is Gladiator 2 linked to Gladiator 1?
Yes, Gladiator 2 is linked with Gladiator 1. The movie will follow the story of Lucilla’s son Lucius Verus. Actor Paul Mescal will play the lead role of Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal is best known for his role as Calum Paterson in Aftersun for which he was nominated for an Oscar). Denzel Washington will be playing the role of a former gladiator who had won his freedom and now become a wealthy man. The Equalizer star character holds a strong grudge against the emperors as we can see in the trailer.

Maximus (Russell Crowe) was a general in Roman forces who had defeated the Germanic tribes and was able to establish peace in the Roman Empire. Knowing the skill and personality of Maximus the Emperor tells Maximus to Become his successor to the throne after his death. However, the arrogant son of the Emperor doesn’t like that and wants the throne for himself so he kills his father and becomes the Emperor. He then gave Maximus and his family the death penalty. Maximus escaped and went to his home to escape the Kingdom with his family but he found out that the soldiers had killed his wife and son. Maximus is then taken by a slave Trader to North Africa where he is sold to Proximo a Gladiator trainer. Maximus soon became a top Gladiator using a different name. When Commodus decides to have a Gladiatorial Spectacle in Rome Proximo brings some of his best Gladiators including Maximus, he fights several gladiators and becomes victorious. Later he defeated the Roman King champion and revealed himself as Maximus.
Senator Gracchus and Commodus’s sister Lucilla (Connie Nielson) agreed to help Maximus escape to assemble his army to depose Commodus, However, Commodus discovered this plot. During Maximus’ escape, Proximo was killed. Maximus was captured, and Commodus declared a one-on-one combat in the area with Maximus. Before the beginning of the combat, Commodus stabs Maximus making him weak but Maximus succeeds in killing Commodus, then dies himself ordering the restoration of the Republican rule and reinstatement of Senator Gracchus.
