According to Modi, who spoke to the Indian community at La Seine Musicale in Paris, “it will be launched from the Eiffel Tower in the coming days, meaning Indian tourists will now be able to pay in rupees through UPI at the Eiffel Tower.”
India’s mobile-based payment system, known as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), enables users to make 24/7 payments using bespoke virtual payment addresses.
Earlier this year, UPI and Singapore’s Pay Now signed an agreement to facilitate cross-border transactions for users in both the countries.
The announcement is seen as a significant development for bilateral trade and tourism between India and France.
In his remarks, PM Modi said that India and France have been working on archaeological missions for a long time. He emphasized that digital infrastructure strengthens ties between the two countries.
“Very few people know that India and France have been working on an archaeological mission for a long time. It extends from Chandigarh to Ladakh.”
Digital infrastructure is another area that strengthens ties between India and France, PM Modi said.
