It looks like DC Studios Co Ceo James Gunn is taking more interest in anti-hero teams like Suicide Squad.  But this time he had revealed the first trailer of DC another anti-hero team – CREATURE COMMANDOS. If you are one of those who have no idea who Creature Commandos are stay with us and for those who already know who Creature Commandos are this article will help them to revive some basic info that will help you to engage with the upcoming series.

Who is Creature Commandos?

Creature commandos first appeared in “Weird War Tales” issue #93, an anthology comic series published by DC from 1971 to 1983. The team was created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick. With the creation of Creature Commandos, DC was able to give the audience a compelling combination of military action and supernatural.

The Creature Commandos team was formed during WORLD WAR II because the enemy forces had employed some supernatural beings and the traditional military strategies were ineffective against these supernatural threats. Unlike the Suicide Squad of DC, Creature Commandos are members not only consist of criminals but also have military personnel and reanimated creatures.

Aside from their comic “The Creature Commandos” they have made appearances in various other comics over the years, primarily in – Weird War Tales #93, G.I. Combat and Justice League Dark.

Frankenstein – The leader of the team, he is a reanimated creature and is inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1881 novel character, he is known for his strength and resilient character. In the comic, he displayed strategic planning and a strong sense of responsibility for his team. His power includes durability, enhanced combat skill both with weapon and hand, and resilience to injury.

Bride – The bride is the female counterpart of Frankenstein and also has a close bond with Frankenstein. She is depicted as strong-willed, her agility and intelligence often come as handy in battleground. She is the 2nd in command of the team.

G.I. Robot – A combat robot that is equipped with advanced technology and weapons. It often takes on tactical and reconnaissance roles. ( The first of these robots was called Jungle Automatic Killer Experimental a.k.a – J.A.K.E designed to aid the U.S. military in war, the 2nd robot J.A.K.E II was the core member of Creature Commandos)

The Werewolf  –  like the Hulk and Bruce Banner, The Werewolf struggles with his human and beastly instincts. His powers include enhanced agility, strength and fast healing. He is an expert in close combat and tracking.

The Vampire –  He has a charismatic but ambiguous personality, like Werewolf he struggles with his predatory nature. His powers include Super strength, speed, control of other creatures, enhanced sense and regenerative abilities, he often plays a key role in Stealth operations.

The Mummy – Is portrayed as an ancient and wise, he has deep knowledge about ancient magic. The Mummy offers insights and protects the team from various magic and ancient rituals.

However, in the upcoming series, we may not see The Werewolf, Vampire and Mummy instead we will see Nina Mazursky, Rick Flag Sr., Dr. Phosphrous and Weasel.

Nina Mazursky – A scientist for S.H.A.D.E. She had done many experiments with living creatures in an attempt to make living creatures for creature commandos. She later experimented on herself and turned into an amphibian woman who joined the commandos.

Rick Flag Sr. –  He is a World War II pilot. He was tasked by S.H.A.D.E. to lead a new team during the war. He has a history with the Justice Society of America and he is the father of Rick Flag who we saw in both Suicide Squad films, his role was played by Joel Kinnaman.

Dr Phosphrous – He is mainly depicted as Batman’s villain in comics, he was previously known as Alex Sartorius whose body changed entirely after exposure to radiation, he now burns with internal flames and wants to take revenge on who caused this to him.

Weasel –  This is the first significant change to The Creature Commandos. Weasel is not part of this team’s roster. Instead, this animal is often in the Suicide Squad. This character is usually seen as a Firestorm villain, but his DCEU origin is unknown.

Creature Commando release date

DCU has announced that the animated series Creature Commando will be releasing its first episode on 5th December 2024 on Max, the series will have a total of 7 episodes in the first season.
