Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy think press is Boring

Cillian Murphy’s press tour for “Oppenheimer” reaches its final stage as the actor completes his final weeks of campaigning before the Oscars, where he is nominated for best actor thanks to his leading role in the atomic bomb epic by Christopher Nolan. If it were up to Murphy, there might not have been a press tour to begin with. In a new GQ cover story, the actor admits that press tours (complete with red carpet interviews and sightseeing trips) aren’t a great role model and that he’d rather let the movies do the heavy lifting of promotion .

“I think it’s a broken model,” Cillian Murphy said of Hollywood’s press tour system, admitting that he was somewhat relieved when the SAG-AFTRA strike began just before “Oppenheimer’s” opening weekend, as it meant that there would be no more press opportunities for a certain amount of time. “The pattern is that everyone is very bored.” ALso read – Only Murders In The Building Season 4 will be outside New York City

Even when his actors were prevented from doing press, Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” became a box office powerhouse along with “Barbie.” Nolan’s film has grossed more than $955 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing biographical drama in film history.

“The same thing happened with ‘Peaky Blinders,'” Murphy noted. “The first three seasons there was no advertising, a tiny program on BBC Two; “It just caught fire because people were talking to each other about it.”

“It’s like Joanne Woodward said,” he added. “‘Acting is like sex: do it, don’t talk about it’… People always told me: ‘He has reservations’ or ‘He’s a difficult to interview’ but Not really! I love talking about work, about art. What is difficult for me, and seems unnecessary and useless with respect to what I want to do, is: ‘Tell me about yourself…'”

Looking back on his personal and professional life, Murphy told GQ that “I haven’t seen many of my movies. I know Johnny Depp would always say that, but it’s actually true. Generally the ones I haven’t seen are the ones I hear that aren’t good.”
