Celine Dion Delivers Emotional Speech at Premiere of ‘I Am: Celine Dion’ Doc

Celine Dion got emotional Monday night at the New York City premiere of “I Am: Celine Dion,” the upcoming documentary on Prime Video about the legendary artist’s life and her battle with a rare neurological disorder, stiff-person syndrome (SPS), when she introduced the film and thanked everyone involved, including her children.

The “Queen of Power Ballads” came to the stage to speak briefly about the documentary and was greeted with loud applause.

At the beginning of her speech, she thanked her therapist, Dr. Amanda Piquet, and the documentary filmmaker, Irene Taylor Brodsky. Dion, 56, also told the audience that this was the largest crowd she had in front of in years.

“Of course, I wouldn’t be here without the daily love and support of my amazing children,” she said. Dion has three sons, René-Charles, 23, and twins Nelson and Eddy, 13, from her late husband René Angelil.

Celine Dior Is Battling SPS

The singer first revealed her diagnosis in an emotional video on Instagram in December 2022, saying she would have to postpone her tour, originally scheduled for the spring of 2023, until 2024. “I have been battling issues related to my health for a long time, and it has been really difficult for me to face these challenges and talk about everything I’m going through,” Dion wrote in the post’s caption.

“I am sad to inform you that I will not be able to resume my tour in Europe in February.”

Stiff-person syndrome is a rare neurological disease that affects one in a million people, with symptoms including “extreme stiffness, debilitating pain, chronic anxiety” and muscle spasms “so violent they can dislocate joints and even break bones,” according to the Stiff Person Syndrome Foundation.

When will the documentary be released?

Prime Video’s I Am: Celine Dion, will be released on June 25, 2024. Prime Video released the film’s eye-opening trailer on Thursday, May 23, showcasing archival and behind-the-scenes footage of Dion throughout her prime as a world-renowned superstar, as well as new interviews in which the five-time Grammy-winning icon grapples with her rare disorder.

According to Prime Video, Dion’s documentary aims to give viewers “a raw and honest look at the iconic superstar’s struggle with a life-changing illness.” Presented as a love letter to his fans, this inspirational documentary highlights the music that has guided his life, while also showcasing the resilience of the human spirit.
