Beverly Johnson recalled HOTEL DRAINED THE POOL after she swam
Beverly Johnson, the first black model on the cover of Vogue, recalls a racist incident. The 71-year-old – who became the first black model on the cover of Vogue almost 50 years ago – revealed she once went swimming at a hotel almost 40 years ago… and they drained the pool water after she came out of the pool.
Johnson said she went to Eileen Ford’s 90th birthday party there were so many models and rich people present, when a girl told her, ‘Remember when they emptied the pool?’ When did you come out of the pool of such and such hotel?
Beverly Johnson was shocked – she didn’t know what had happened so long ago… and although she didn’t know it then, she was sure it was racism. Johnson did not name the hotel and said she was not thinking about suing. She also said, “As a model, a lot of things happened to me because I was black.”
