Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will open the Venice Film Festival with its world premiere
The 81st Venice International Film Festival will kick off this year with the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s highly anticipated sequel to his hit 1988 horror comedy.
The film will have its world premiere in Venice on August 28, out of competition.
Beetlejuice stars Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara to regroup for the sequel, along with Justin Theroux, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe. The Warner Bros. release will be released in North America on September 6 and internationally starting September 4.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks the long-awaited return of one of Tim Burton’s most iconic cinematic characters, but also the happy confirmation of the extraordinary visionary talent and cinematic mastery of one of the most fascinating auteurs of his time,” said Venice Artistic director Alberto Barbera, noting that the festival is “honoured and proud to host the world premiere of a work that contains a surprising twist of creative imagination and hallucinatory rhythmic movement.” Also read – Nick Cannon revealed why he insured his private parts for $10 million
Burton added: “I’m very excited about this. It means a lot to me to have the world premiere of this film at the Venice Film Festival.”
Warners has a strong history in Venice. The studio premiered Todd Phillips’ Joker at the Lido in 2019, successfully launching the film as a superhero-adjacent blockbuster and, after winning the Venice Golden Lion for Best Picture, an awards season contender. WB did it again in Venice in 2021 with Dune, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic, causing a stir at the festival that lit the fire under the film and helped raise funds of 400 million dollars plus global gross.
The 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival will take place from August 28 to September 7.
