Andy Cohen is clarifying rumours surrounding his friendship with longtime friend John Mayer.
Andy Cohen the 55-year-old Watch What Happens Live host addressed speculation that he and the Grammy winner are romantically linked.
“Let them speculate! “I honestly love John Mayer and he loves me,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But because we’re so affectionate towards each other, people don’t know what box to put that in.”
“They assume we’re sleeping with each other, which is definitely not true,” he said.
Fans have long joked about whether Mayer and Cohen, 46, were ever more than friends, as the two have been close and affectionate friends for years. Cohen celebrated the singer’s 40th birthday with him on a group trip to Brazil, while Mayer was a guest at Andy Cohen’s 2019 baby shower and previously hosted him for his 50th birthday. He also spoke at Cohen’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in February 2022.
Mayer told the crowd during the ceremony, “He’s a Madonna stan and a Deadhead. He’s an A-lister who parties like a B-lister, with the free spirit of a C-lister.” “I love Andy more than I can tell you. He’s a fantastic human being, a hilarious partner, a loving son and brother – and most recently he’s become a proud, engaged and deeply devoted father.”
Andy Cohen told THR why he found Mayer’s speech particularly poignant, explaining, “When he inducted me into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, John Mayer said that I inadvertently became his gay best friend, Who never had a gay best friend.”
He added, “There are a lot of moms who have come up to me at book signings and say, ‘I watched your show for years with my son, who later came out of the closet, and having you was so great to us.
Andy Cohen’s comments come after the television personality claimed in June that he and Mayer “were in love with each other” during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show.
When asked if he loves the “New Light” singer, the author of The Daddy Diaries: The Year I Grew Up, who is gay, answered yes — but swore on his beloved children, 5-year-old Benjamin Allen and 2-year-old Lucy that he and Mayer, who is heterosexual, have never had sex.
He later clarified on an episode of Radio Andy that he had made the original comment “suddenly and without thinking”.
“It became headline news. And the more it became headline news, the more I got over it,” he explained at the time. “You know why? Aren’t two men allowed to say they’re in love? Are we all that stupid?”
When co-host John Hill teased that Andy Cohen enjoys connecting with Mayer in this way, the TV personality explained that he finds the attention “weird.” Also read- Mark Hamill’s Joker The Prince Of Crime is Back
“We have a great friendship and we hang out all the time,” he previously told CNN. “I’m not surprised because we also have a lot of love for each other. So it seems like an obvious assumption.”
