The Piano Lesson Synopsis
The story of The Piano Lesson is set in Pittsburgh in 1936, during the aftermath of the Great Depression. The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles home and an heirloom, the family piano, which is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor.
The play centres on the arguments between a brother and sister who have different ideas about what to do with the piano. The brother, Boy Willie, is a sharecropper who wants to sell the piano to buy the land (Sutter’s land) where his ancestors worked as slaves. The sister, Berniece, insists on keeping the piano, which has the faces of her great-grandfather’s wife and son carved into it during the time of his slavery. Who is August Wilson?
August Wilson was one of the most important playwrights in the United States. He was largely self-taught. He participated in the black aesthetic movement, co-founded and directed Pittsburgh’s Black Horizons Theatre (1968), published poetry in African-American magazines, and produced several plays, including Jitney (1982), before Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom opened on Broadway in 1984. Inspired by African-American slang, music, folklore, and storytelling tradition, he continued his cycle of plays, each set in a different decade of the 20th century, with Fences (1986, Pulitzer Prize), Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (1988), The Piano Lesson (1990, Pulitzer Prize), Two Trains Running (1992), Seven Guitars (1996), Gem of the Ocean (premiered 2003), King Hedley II (2005), and Radio Golf (premiered 2005).
In 2006, Wilson was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame. He passed away on October 2, 2005.
