SpongeBob and Sandy Cheeks team up to save Bikini Bottom in ‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’
More than 25 years after Sandy Cheeks was introduced in the first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, she’s getting her own movie and the stakes couldn’t be higher. The brave sea rodent goes on a quest with SpongeBob to save her adopted hometown.
Netflix on Tuesday released the first trailer for Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, showing everyone’s favourite sponge and maritime rodent emerging from the ocean and taking on Texas to save their underwater home.
Will there be a Sandy Cheeks movie?
Confirmed to be in the works in April 2023, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie follows Sandy, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Patrick as they try to save their beloved town after B.O.O.T.S. Marine Biology Laboratory. According to an official synopsis for the film, “When Bikini Bottom and all of its inhabitants are suddenly pulled out of the ocean, Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants travel to Sandy’s home state of Texas, where they meet Sandy’s family and must save Bikini Bottom from the hands of an evil CEO.”
Saving Bikini Bottom is directed by Liza Johnson (Dead to Me, Silicon Valley) from a script by SpongeBob SquarePants veteran Kaz and Tom Stern.
Who is in the cast of Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie?
The upcoming film, which uses 3D computer animation and live-action photography, sees Carolyn Lawrence and Tom Kenny reprising their roles as Sandy and SpongeBob SquarePants from the long-running cartoon.
And they are joined by a cast of friends old and new, including Wanda Sykes, Clancy Brown, Mr Lawrence, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Johnny Knoxville, Grey DeLisle, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Craig Robinson and Matty Cardarople. Will a SpongeBob Movie be released in 2024?
‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’ will arrive on Netflix on August 2, 2024. As Sandy would say, it will come faster than a barefoot hare on a hot, greasy griddle in mid-August.

Saving Bikini Bottom marks the latest addition to the beloved SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. The flagship series premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999 and is still airing; The series will conclude its fourteenth season this month.

There are currently two additional films in the works: Netflix’s The Plankton Movie (Plankton fails to take over the world and continues to run Chum Bucket, aided by his IT wife Karen in his never-ending rivalry with Mr Krabs) scheduled to debut next year, and Paramount’s announcement of The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (which follows SpongeBob SquarePants as he travels to the depths of the ocean to confront the ghost of the Flying Dutchman) is scheduled to be released on December 19, 2025.
