Ariana Grande responds to criticisms about her voice changing

Ariana Grande is silencing criticisms about her speaking voice. After a clip of her recent interview on Penn Badgley’s Podcrush podcast began circulating online — thanks to fans pointing out how she dramatically changes her pitch and cadence at one point — the pop star explained on Tuesday (June 18) that the change in her voice is completely natural.

In a TikTok post showcasing the interview clip, Grande began talking about recording new music in a lower tone and then abruptly switched to a higher register. “Voice changed??” the uploader captioned the video.

In the replies, however, the “Thank U, Next” singer herself jumped in to finish off other commenters who accused her of changing the way she speaks, saying that her higher tone is not a matter of “habit” and is due to “speaking like this for two years playing Glinda on the set of Wicked.”

“And vocal health too,” she continued. “I purposely change my singing position (high/low) often depending on the volume of my singing.” Also read – Celine Dion Delivers Emotional Speech at Premiere of ‘I Am: Celine Dion’ Doc

This isn’t the first time fans have noticed a change in Grande’s speaking voice.

Some were concerned when she performed with her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo at the 2024 Academy Awards, where her voice sounded higher than usual. However, the two-time Grammy winner has been open about transforming herself for the role of Glinda.

“It took six months to prepare for the audition — voice lessons every day, acting lessons every day,” she said on The Zach Sang Show in February. “I trained every day … to change my voice, even — like, my singing voice — everything about me, I had to eliminate them to prove that I could handle this other person.” Others compared the changed voice to Austin Butler’s Elvis transformation, where he continued to sound like the rock ‘n’ roll legend even after his film debut.

New music from Ariana Grande

While some were focused on her way of speaking, many fans were more excited by Ariana Grande’s revelation on Podcrushed that she has even more new music — Presumably, this will be a deluxe edition of Ariana Grande’s Billboard 200-topping album, Eternal Sunshine.

“I’ve been living in the studio,” she said on the show. “I went to the studio the day after the Met [Gala] and was there for 10 days. I’ve been writing a lot, maybe even more. I want to do a deluxe at some point.
