Renowned martial artist Donnie Yen will star in the upcoming remake of the 70s classic action film Kung-Fu, with the John Wick creator.

According to Deadline, Yen, best known for starring in the Ip Man franchise and John Wick: Chapter 4, will play Kwai Chang Caine in the remake, a role once played by David Carradine in the original martial arts ABC.

Released in 1972, the series stars Carradine as Caine, a Shaolin monastery priest and MMA expert who flees to the United States after killing the men who murdered his master. While wandering the Old West, Monk must use his spiritual training to uncover his past and find his long-lost family.

Director David Leitch, who also produced the first John Wick film, is looking to direct the film, while  Stephen Chin will write the screenplay, though it’s unclear at this time if a film adaptation will also be in the works.

As for Donnie Yen, it makes sense that he would take on the role given his background in martial arts training, which he showcased in last year’s Wicked franchise. Also read – Gladiator 2 – Cast, Plot, Release date: Everything you need to know

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, John Wick 4 director Scott Rogers said that Yen “brings master-level fighting ability” to his films, meaning “he’s not an actor you have to look at.” His ability to enhance the choreography through his creativity is world-class.”

However, it seems Yen has some competition as this is not the first time kung fu has seen a revival. There have been several remakes over the years, ranging from the 2021 adaptation of the same name based on a female MMA fighter to the ’90s police drama Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.

The Kung-Fu remake does not have a release date yet.
