Mercedes Benz Group make history by successfully test run Truck to a distance of 1,047 km with a single fuel filling
Mercedes Benz Group AG, a German auto-manufacturing company and the parent company of Daimler Truck AG, which is famous for manufacturing heavy-duty trucks, successfully tested a hydrogen-fueled prototype of the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 truck and drove the distance Made history. 1,047 km between Wörth am Rhine and Berlin with a single filling of liquid hydrogen.
Powered by the CellCentric fuel-cell system and equipped with a liquid hydrogen fuel tank system, the race started at noon on September 25 at the Mercedes-Benz Trucks customer center in Wörth am Rhine and ended on September 26 in Berlin. The truck achieved a gross combined vehicle weight of 40 tons, fully loaded and in real-life conditions, without emitting any CO2 during the entire race. The record drive with sealed tanks and controlled mileage was independently confirmed by an inspection document from TUV Rhineland.
Following the successful record run, Andreas Gorbach, Head of Truck Technology and member of the Board of Management of Daimler Truck AG, drove the truck across the finish line in the Ministergarten in Berlin.
Hydrogen supplied by Air Liquide, a French multinational gas company, is produced from biomethane with a guarantee of origin. During the refueling process, cryogenic liquid hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius was filled into two 40 kg tanks mounted on either side of the truck chassis. Thanks to the particularly good insulation of vehicle tanks, hydrogen can be kept at room temperature for a sufficiently long time without active cooling. Both tanks were sealed by TÜV Rhineland before the start of the #HydrogenRecordRun.
Daimler Trucks Commitment
Three years ago, on September 16, 2020, Daimler Trucks announced in Berlin a commitment to invest in hydrogen technology on a large scale. CEO Martin Daum presented the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck Concept to the public for the first time to outline the company’s technology strategy. This was followed by the establishment of a joint venture, Cell Centric, with Volvo Group, which will commission one of Europe’s largest production facilities for fuel cells.
Since 2021, the first prototypes of the Mercedes Benz GenH2 Truck have been undergoing rigorous testing and recently demonstrated their capabilities on the Brenner Pass, one of Europe’s busiest and most challenging transit routes. The successful #HydrogenRecordRun now marks another milestone on the path to sustainable transportation.
What are the Advantage and Disadvantage of Hydrogen Fuel?
Advantage
The renew able and are found in large amount in the universe
It is clean source of energy with very little to zero pollution and is non toxic in nature
It is a high density source of Energy with high energy efficiency than any common fuel
It not emit greenhouse gases which mean they don’t have carbon footprint while in use
Unlike the Electric vehicles it don’t take long time to fuel up
Disadvantage
The engine to run hydrogen fuel is costly
Hydrogen fuel is more flammable than other fossil fuel, so special fuel tank need to made to regulate it temperature
