The situation worsened to such an extent during Muharram that there was a clash with the police and about a dozen policemen were injured.
Chaos broke out in Delhi’s Nangloi during the Muharram procession on Saturday when a group led by one of the organizers of Tajiya (Muharram) was not allowed to move away from the designated route of the procession.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Harendra Kumar Singh said, “Around 10,000-15,000 people were taking out the Tajia procession, while some of the people in the procession became unruly. They wanted to move away from the routes fixed by the traffic police. When we tried to stop them, they started pelting stones and in response the police lathi-charged. Several police personnel were injured and police vehicles were also vandalized.”
“The group dispersed. No arrests have been made so far and the investigation is on.”
In preparation for the Muharram procession, the Delhi Traffic Police had issued a traffic advisory aimed at regulating traffic flow in Central and New Delhi areas. The advisory, which was in force from Friday night till Saturday morning, covers 32 stretches in these areas. Additionally, traffic authorities had diverted vehicles from 16 other points in Central, New Delhi and South Delhi to facilitate the smooth movement of Tajiya processions.
Around four people died due to electrocution on Saturday morning during Muharram procession in Khetko village of Peterbar police station area of Bokaro district of Jharkhand.
The incident took place around 6 am, in which at least 13 people were injured.
